"Rogers-Barnes. It does have a nice ring to it."
They decide not to wear their uniforms for several reasons. Bucky’s still not comfortable in his own skin sometimes, let alone the uniform he doesn’t feel he has a right to wear. Steve doesn’t push the matter and Pepper quickly announces that khaki doesn’t work with the color scheme anyway so it’s just as well.
Bucky does let Clint cut his hair and there aren’t half as many casualties as anyone expected. The only person who ended up crying had been Steve - for totally different reasons.
The ceremony itself is small. Natasha is Steve’s best man and Pepper is Bucky’s, the only solution to what had become an outright war between Tony, Thor, Sam and Clint. Thor officiates: he’s a god, he can do that if he wants. Peggy is there, accompanied by her niece, and she dances with Bucky before she dances with Steve, warning the both of them not to step on her toes when in reality they are barely touching the ground as they hold her carefully in their arms.
They spend the rest of the night dancing together, the rest of the world fading away around them.
"You fasten that tie yourself, Rogers?" Bucky asks, straightening Steve’s tie for the tenth time that day.
"Barnes," Steve corrects with a grin that is reflected back in Bucky’s eyes. He’s Steve Barnes now. Steve Rogers is Captain America and he belongs to the world. Steve Barnes belongs to Bucky alone.
"Barnes," Bucky grins. "I could get used to that."
"You’re gonna have to," Steve tells him, leaning in for a kiss, "I plan on sticking around for a long time."
